Town of Harbour Breton Public Works

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the water and sewer system and general maintenance of the town equipment.

The town water and sewer system consists of a watershed supplying 500,000 liters each day when the fishplant is in full operation. The water from the watershed flows by gravity to the chlorination sytem and then pumped to a 100,000 liter pressure equalization reservoir for distribution throughout the town. The operation of the system is monitored by a computer system located at the town hall. The computer monitors the status of the chlorination pumps, supply pumps and the water level in the reservoir. Should a fault occur, an alarm sounds and at times when the town hall is unstaffed, the system is connected to a telephone line to alert the Town Superintendent who then comes to his office to see what the problem might be and take steps to correct it.

In addition to the water and sewer system, the Department is responsible for snowclearing, sanding and salting of roads in winter and repair and maintenance during the summer. The Department also provides support to the other departments of council as required. The town Superintendent is Harold Brace.
