IAS Committee Meets with Premier

As a result of the TCH Protest and previous letters requesting a meeting with the Premier, on Wednesday February 9th, 2005 representative from the IAS Committee traveled to St. John's to meet with Premier Danny Williams.

In addition to the Premier, Kathy Dunderdale (Minister INTRD), Jack Byrne (Minister MAPA), Trevor Taylor (Minister DFA), and Oliver Langdon were present to hear our concerns. At this meeting the IAS Committee Chair, Dave Vardy presented the Premier with the Income Adjustment Proposal as well as outlined our position on a number of issues surrounding the closure of the FPI Fish Plant that the committee will be pursuing in the months to come.

By all accounts the meeting, which lasted approximately 1.5 hrs, was successful with the Premier expressing his Government's support and assistance in helping us through this crisis. A Special Committee of Cabinet was established and includes the Premier, Kathy Dunderdale (Minister INTRD), Jack Byrne (Minister MAPA), and Trevor Taylor (Minister DFA). those The Province issued a news release following the meeting confirming their support.

Other Meetings

Meetings were also set up with our Local MP Bill Matthews and our Federal Cabinet Minister John Efford to present our income adjustment proposal as well as outline our position with respect quotas.

The Committee also met with representatives of FPI to discuss the income adjustment proposal.

Income Adjustment Proposal

The Income Adjustment Proposal presented to the Province, Federal Government and FPI is based on a 2 year timeframe and proposes a partnership approach with both levels of government and FPI to provide funding to generate meaningful work experiences for displaced workers. The intent is to ensure that the community remains stable in the short term while long-term planning issues pursued and developed.
