In response to the closure of the
local FPI Fish Plant on November 19, 2004 steps have been
taken to address the immediate needs of the community as well as explore
the long term sustainable options available for the processing sector in
Harbour Breton.
The Town of Harbour Breton and its Economic Development Committee
prepared and submitted, to HRSDC, a proposal to establish an IAS
Committee to undertake the steps necessary to
®
develop of a credible business plan that will identify a feasible and
sustainable operation plan for the FPI processing facility,
® develop
a human resources strategy to ensure the skilled labour force remains
intact during the interim,
® develop,
present and champion the rationale regarding securing a quota for the
Connaigre Region,
® identify
the local raw material currently being landed in the region and an
indication of what percentage could realistically be secured for the
Harbour Breton operation, and
® negotiated
commitment for financial assistance from stakeholder groups including,
but not limited to Fishery Products International, the Provincial and
Federal Governments, and other financing institutions.
The main funding for the operation of this IAS Committee is being
provided by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, with
additional funds being provided by Fishery Products International
